Obviously you have to end up with a house that ticks all the right boxes - both functional criteria and in terms of its character. But there will invariably be some compromise, not matter what the budget. This is only realistic and to be expected when buying a property.
Once in residence the new owners generally either make a suitable change to the property, or adapt to their new home accordingly and get on with enjoying it. And the surrounding area is, of course, key to this enjoyment.
This is all rather obvious. But all too often we come across people who have been seduced out of the locations they know, most often because of a "bargain" price. And it is fair to say that many overseas buyers in Mallorca have only a limited knowledge of the island outside of the locations they have visited on holiday.
So venturing to locations that are not familiar can, unfortunately, be a fundamental mistake, one which you may not notice in the first few months, but will gradually come to realise as you return on a regular basis.
Apart from being a great disappointment, this can be an expensive mistake to rectify as moving costs can be substantial and, in the current market, it can take time to sell properties.
Granted, it can be difficult to check lots of locations when you are researching things from abroad and have limited time to spend on the ground in Mallorca.
